We are pleased to share a newsletter dedicated to Water Quality — a topic directly linked to Sustainable Development Goal 6 — Clean Water and Sanitation.

Water is one of the most fundamental resources on Earth, yet access to safe water remains a critical global challenge. By 2050, global water demand is expected to increase by 55%. Currently, more than 3.6 billion people lack access to safe sanitation, almost 2 billion use contaminated water sources, and every year around 3.4 million deaths are attributed to water-borne diseases — many of them children.

The newsletter explores the issue from multiple angles — from the question of whether tap or bottled water is the better choice, to the alarming presence of pharmaceuticals, microplastics, and agricultural pollutants in water sources around the world. It also presents innovative solutions being implemented globally: Denmark’s shift to separate sewage systems, Singapore’s NEWater molecular purification programme, Israel’s dynamic water tariffs, and New Zealand’s use of DNA testing to identify sources of river contamination.

An expert contribution from Urszula Binduga, M.A., from the Department of Civilization Diseases and Regenerative Medicine at UITM, offers practical guidance on choosing the right water for your individual needs. The publication also highlights UITM’s own sustainable water management initiatives, including the installation of rainwater collection tanks and drip irrigation systems supporting the university’s educational garden.

This is a valuable resource for anyone interested in water safety, environmental health, and the everyday choices that contribute to a more sustainable world.
