SUSEE’s First In-Person Workshop Ignites Collaborative Momentum in Compiègne
From June 5th to 7th, 2024, the city of Compiègne in France became a hub of international teamwork of academics interested in adding sustainability dimension in engineering education as the SUSEE project held its first in-person workshop at Université de Technologie de Compiègne (UTC). Over 20 participants from four partnering universities gathered under one roof—among them a group of 8 students who brought fresh perspectives and youthful energy to the discussions.
The workshop marked a milestone in the project’s development. For the first time, partners came together face-to-face to review the extensive teaching content already collected for the Catalogue of Teaching Content—an evolving digital resource designed to exchange up-to-date information on how sustainability is addressed by engineering education in the partnering universities from Rzeszów, Ilmenau, Compiegne and Bolzano. Through collaborative discussions, the team worked to identify content gaps in their educational offerings taking into account the multidisciplinary and practical nature of sustainability in the modern world.
But the workshop wasn’t just about reflection—it was also about planning the road ahead. A major milestone was the joint design of the Virtual Lecture Series, which will bring expert-led sustainability lectures to a wider audience. In parallel, the framework for the Modular Course on Sustainability in Engineering began to take shape, sparking new ideas for how students across institutions can learn through a flexible, interconnected curriculum.
Strategic planning also took center stage. The Communication Plan, essential for keeping all partners aligned and the public informed, was approved. Discussions around future Winter and Summer Schools led to a preliminary calendar and creative brainstorming on possible themes and participant profiles.
As the workshop wrapped up, the SUSEE community had taken a step forward – turning plans into action and ideas into structure. Below are some photos from the workshop.
