Followng the successful and insightful SUSEE Winter School in Ilmenau titled “Energy and Well-Being”, we continue our journey to incorporate sustainability aspects into engineering education! The next stop in our itinerary is the Summer School at unibz, Bolzano, which has been scheduled for 14th – 18th July 2025.
This time we will focus on the design perspective in engineering, so important to address and understand sustainability. The leading theme of the Summer School is “Axiomatic Design and Systems Engineering for Sustainable System Design” and it will be delivered in cooperation with the International Association for Axiomatic Design. The invitation and indicative agenda is below:

The programme offers a comprehensive overview of the fundamental principles of Axiomatic Design (AD), drawing on over 30 years of teaching and practical experience. Aimed at beginners and experienced users alike, it introduces both qualitative and quantitative methods for applying AD to select optimal design solutions and encourage innovation. Developed by Nam Suh at MIT in the late 1970s, AD is based on two core axioms: Maintaining the independence of functional requirements, and Minimizing the information content of designs, and for the needs of the Summer School we will add strong focus on sustainability.
The programme demonstrates how AD can enhance design value while reducing costs and complexity. It also includes practical training in using Mirò software for designing complex systems and products. This session will be particularly useful for students, PhD candidates, researchers, and design professionals seeking either an introduction to or a renewed understanding of AD principles.
The recruitment procedures shall be started by each university individually. Please, contact your local SUSEE coordinator on further details about recruitment and available options.
